Benedict-Godwin Freo Flores’s Road to Excellence: Engineering a greener future for the Philippines

A life-changing opportunity began with something most people would have scrolled past.

Benedict came across an online advertisement for VinUniversity. What seemed like a simple social media post soon led him to apply for a scholarship, complete multiple interview rounds, and ultimately earn the Vingroup Full-Ride Scholarship for Filipino Talents.

⭐️ Finding purpose through engineering

Benedict’s interest in Electrical Engineering began at an early age. Growing up around family members who worked in the field, he became fascinated by the role engineering plays in shaping modern societies. More than circuits or machines, he saw engineering as a way to solve problems, drive innovation, and improve lives.

That passion eventually led him to apply to VinUniversity, where he hopes to develop the technical expertise needed to contribute to a rapidly evolving technological world.

⭐️ Building a strong foundation

Benedict’s ambition is supported by a strong academic record. Throughout high school, he consistently excelled in STEM subjects, achieving outstanding results in Mathematics, Physics, Science, and Advanced Placement courses. In 2025, he was awarded Third Prize in the Grade 11 Division of Talents in Mathematics at the regional level, reflecting both his analytical ability and passion for problem-solving.

Benedict’s interests extended well beyond textbooks and exams. He actively pursued opportunities outside the classroom. He served as an organizer for his school’s Book Club, competed in the City-Level Myth Volleyball competition, and was selected as a finalist in Brainmiac, a school-level science fair. These experiences helped him develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills alongside his academic strengths.

⭐️ Thinking bigger than himself

What makes Benedict’s story particularly memorable is the scale of his ambition. He openly shares a goal that many would consider bold: becoming “the Elon Musk of the Philippines.”

For Benedict, however, this dream is not about fame. It is about impact. Seeing the growth of Vietnam’s electric vehicle industry, particularly the rise of VinFast, has inspired him to imagine what could be possible in the Philippines. One day, he hopes to establish an electric vehicle company that helps accelerate innovation and sustainable development in his home country.

As he prepares to begin his journey at VinUniversity, Benedict carries with him a belief that excellence is not simply about achievement. It is about having the courage to dream beyond borders, embrace challenges, and turn opportunities into something meaningful for others.

And perhaps that willingness to think bigger than himself is what makes his journey truly remarkable.
