Two VinUniversity’s Funded Projects by VinIF in Response to Smart Healthcare Service and Smart Lighting Technology

Professors Minh Do and Le Van Quynh from the College of Engineering and Computer Science at VinUniversity have won research awards totaling 9 billion VND (~380K USD) in the latest round of research funding announced by VinIF. These projects will span three years and aim to deliver concrete solutions to challenges in technology and health services relevant to Vietnam and the world.

Professor Minh Do, who is also a Professor at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, together with Dr. Hieu Pham of VinUni, Dr. Phi-Le Nguyen and Dr. Hung Nguyen of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Prof. Duc Tran of University of Massachusetts, and Prof. My Thai of University of Florida will be working on a project titled: VAIPE: AI-assisted IoT-enabled smart, optimal, and Protective hEalthcare monitoring and supporting system for Vietnamese. The research team also includes medical practitioners from Vietnamese hospitals, and graduate and undergraduate students from both VinUni and HUST.

The prevalent self-medication practice in Vietnam raises a critical challenge and opportunity to develop smart and protective healthcare monitoring and supporting systems. The VAIPE project attempts to address this opportunity by developing, among other things, a smartphone app that uses the camera and novel AI and visual recognition methods to allow the user to easily digitalize health records, including doctor’s diagnostics and prescription, daily in-take medication and readings of medical devices at home.

The ultimate goal is to provide ordinary citizens with easy access to timely, reliable, usable and personalized information and intelligence about their health. At the same time, the medical community will benefit from this rich data that can be used to develop health care policy and practices to benefit the Vietnamese, and lead to more research and analysis not just for Vietnam and the larger medical community.

The second project, led by Dr. Le Van Quynh, is titled “Perovskite MetaLEDs: a smart lighting device over conventional light-emitted diodes (LEDs) for electric vehicle’s lighting and ultra-high resolution displays” and includes prominent researchers from Graduate University of Science and Technology (GUST), Hanoi University of Science (VNU) Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France.

Perovskite MetaLEDs is a solution of smart lighting with smart functionalities such as adaptive driving brightness, windshield augmented reality, and exterior and interior lighting effects with a crucial aid of artificial intelligence. In this project, Professor Quynh Le and his collaborators will develop the MetaLEDs specifically for applications in electric vehicles, where energy optimization is at a premium, and potentially target the near-eye displays in augmented reality applications. Even better, most of the major steps of fabrication of the LEDs can be manufactured right in Vietnam, which will propel Vietnam as a provider of this cutting-edge technology in the South-East Asian region.

In addition to the commercialization potential for the research, professor Quynh will also gradually develop a comprehensive characterization lab at VinUniversity that can characterize a variety of electrical and optical properties of miniature LEDs on a single optical bench. His characterization lab will be at the interface between optics and electronics. It is not only the first such lab in Vietnam but he also aims for a unique lab in the world that can perform comprehensive characterizations of optoelectronic devices.

Both Prof. Minh Do and Prof. Quynh highly appreciated the generous support from VinUniversity’s seed fund, which helps them to win further funding opportunities like VinIF or others to develop their initiatives at larger scale. “The seed-funding from VinUniversity enabled us to build prototypes and collect preliminary data to win this external funding award,” said Professor Minh Do.
