#ResearchProjects | Recruiting Master Student | PhD Student for the project “Data-driven Optimization of High-energy Sodium-ion Battery Materials”

December 26, 2025

Successful candidates will be enrolled as Master by Research students or PhD candidates at the College of Engineering & Computer Science (CECS), VinUni.

Project Information

With the increasing demand for large-scale energy storage and electric mobility, sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries are emerging as a promising complementary technology to lithium-ion batteries. However, commercial Na-ion battery packs have not yet been widely deployed, presenting opportunities for in-depth research to accelerate their commercialization.

This project, led by Dr. Phung Thi Viet Bac, focuses on the development of sustainable electrode and electrolyte materials. At the same time, it integrates machine learning (ML) with density functional theory (DFT) simulations to optimize material design, synthesis, and battery performance.

The project is also scientifically advised by Professor Konstantin Novoselov – Nobel Laureate in Physics (2010) and Professor Rachid Yazami – Laureate of the VinFuture Grand Prize (2023).

Research Objectives

– Develop and synthesize low-cost, abundant, and environmentally friendly materials for cathodes and anodes (with reduced Ni, Co content).

– Apply ML and DFT simulations to optimize material composition, synthesis conditions, and investigate the mechanisms of sodium-ion/electron migration.

– Fabricate and test prototype Na-ion cells (coin-cell or pouch-cell formats).

This project aims to develop next-generation Na-ion batteries with high energy density, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability, contributing to large-scale energy storage and the advancement of green, sustainable mobility.
