VinUniversity Students Joining Efforts To Develop Medication Monitoring App
Realizing the common issue of patients lacking proper self-care routines and organized medication as well as healthcare information archiving, Prof. Do Ngoc Minh, Vice-Provost of VinUniversity among the top 2% most influential researchers worldwide (according to PLOS Biology 2020, United States), along with Dr. Nguyen Phi Le and Nguyen Thanh Hung from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and Dr. Pham Huy Hieu from VinBigData (Vingroup Big Data Institute) has launched the project on development of a medication monitoring app namely EMEC.
EMEC App allows users to record their historical medication data and provides reminders for medication promptly as per prescription. In addition, app users’ medicine detailed descriptions and related pathologies will also be recorded for prevention of future emergence. With supports from the research team from Hanoi University of Science and Technology and VinBigData, 12 students from Vietnam including Phan Nhat Huy – a first-year student in College of Engineering and Computer Science, VinUniversity, and Hoang Trung Dung – a third-year student at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) ranked 16th worldwide on QS ranking of Engineering and Technology major, have actively participated in the project.
To reshape the medication habits of Vietnamese people to be more orderly, the research team hope to gradually develop EMEC to accompany each and everyone in their healthcare journey with a scientific approach to medication in terms of specific methods and doses. The development of this app also helps collect data on medicine consumption in Vietnam as it serves future research purposes.
Sharing about his role in the research, Phan Nhat Huy said: “ In this project, my assignment is researching about medicine and prescription recognition via AI-integrated image processing. It is truly a challenging task for a first-year student to deal with such complicated technical matter, however, it is also a great opportunity for me to grow my problem-solving mindset as a real engineer.” Under the dedicated instructions of Prof. Do Ngoc Minh and with the participation of research teams from VinBigdata and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the project provides promising transitions in medication habits of Vietnamese people as it helps grows a healthier and more scientific lifestyles.
Given the scale of the first admission batch of 230 students, the current student-to-faculty ratios at VinUniversity is 6:1, an ideal ratio for education and research environment being maintained by many of the world’s leading universities. Thanks to this advantage, VinUniversity students can easily access an abundance of opportunities to participate in research and scientific journal publications along with our Professors and other faculty members, who are highly experienced in researching and working at leading universities of the world. Along with a high concentration of high-caliber researchers across the network of Vingroup institutes and partner universities, VinUniversity students in general and students at College of Engineering and Computer Science in particular can utilize the various opportunities being given to participate in meaningful and exciting projects that truly reflect the spirit of “science for humanity”.
