THE OPPORTUNITY

VinUni positions itself as not-for-profit higher education institution with vision to become world-class. Together with its sister Vinmec Healthcare System, VinUni College of Health Sciences (CHS) campus will be an academic medical center that will not only educate the new generations of health professionals but also develop an innovative, impactful research agenda, aimed at improving the health and health care of all Vietnamese people.

In the long run, CHS plans to develop also a new Medical Research Complex in its campus, that accommodate joined VinUni-Vinmec research institutions of high priority. VinUni and Vinmec’s current research efforts are focused on the major causes of death and disability in Vietnam and include: cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolism-related diseases, clinical immunology, neurology and other NCDs as well as new trends in health technology, regenerative medicine and stem cell.

This position represent a unique opportunity to join a growing research and academic program and to play a critical role in shaping the ambitious research agenda of both the University and Vinmec.

We seek a visionary leader with rigorous academic credentials and a distinguished record of excellence in population or bio-medical research. We desire a collegial, collaborative, outstanding scientist with a significant track record of funded research. The successful candidate will have strong administrative skills, a track record of research leadership in academic institutions.

The Vice Dean for Health Research (VDHR) will chair the VinUni/Vinmec Research Scientific Commmittee and work in accordance with the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) between VinUni and Vinmec leaderboard. The Vice Dean reports to the Dean of CHS and work closely with Vinmec leaders, to promote interprofessional academic and research initiatives that advance evidence-based practice, and clinical excellence. The Vice Dean collaborates with academic leaders and faculty across CHS and VinUni to support the University vision and mission and to effectively communicate them constituencies within and external to VinUni. S/he will support and promote research agenda (including clinical research at Vinmec) and research training programs of the highest quality, public service, and economic development activities of the College of Health Sciences.

This position is a full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor. VinUni offers an excellent remuneration package and benefits.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

In the context of the VinUni College of Health Sciences and Vinmec strategic alliance, this is a dual-role leadership position to provides leadership for the planning, development, implementation, assessment, and improvement of all health research programs, policies and supporting infrastructure. The VDHR plays a critical role in setting the research vision of the CHS as well as Vinmec, providing leadership to faculty and staff, and ensuring consistent quality standards in all its research activities. The VDHR oversees the research integrity and provides leadership in long-range planning, budgeting, and program development for health sciences research. The VDHR in collaboration with the Provost’s office and the Vice Provost of Research at University level to ensure compliance with various accreditation agencies as well as federal accreditation and regulations.

Major responsibilities for this position include:

  • In collaboration with the CHS Dean and the Vinmec leadership develop a strategic plan for a joint impactful research agenda in healthcare that supports and enhance the mission of both Institutions.
  • Works collaboratively with the College’s grants and sponsored programs office on issues regarding regulatory oversight and compliance.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills to promote cooperative and collaborative interdisciplinary research with other Colleges of VinUni as well as academic, clinical, and educational partners and private industry.
  • Identifies funding opportunities, including school wide capacity building projects and facilitates grant writing.
  • Supports capacity building of faculty and Vinmec physicians and scientists by organizing regular training and information sessions on research-related topics (grant writing and submission, budget development and management, overall research project management), mentoring junior faculty in all aspects of extramural funding, and facilitating the successful preparation and submission of proposals.
  • Participates in the allocation of research space, distributing funds for research equipment and encouraging the formation of collaborative research efforts and sharing of resources (when appropriate).
  • Prepares and disseminates annual reports documenting the College funding, grant applications, and publications to VinUni administrators, faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • The VDHR is expected to engage with not only Vingroup and its affiliated companies, but also with other organizations in Vietnam and around the world to develop a robust and mutually beneficial industry engagement program for research, technological innovation, and commercialization in healthcare.
  • The VDHR must lead the process of hosting CHS/ Vinmec-wide events related to healthcare research and innovation, such as roundtables, conferences, and symposia that bring academic scholars and health industry executives to its campus for engaging discussions.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team of the CHS and Vinmec, the VDHR serves on university’s Academic Advisory Board (if required), chairs the CHS and Vinmec research committees, and maybe be asked to take on special responsibility from time to time, based on availability, need, and urgency.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Distinguished scholar with academic record to warrant the position of full professor in health sciences at high-quality university (e.g. QS top “50 under 50 university” or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated significant experiences with research leadership and development of research program in healthcare.
  • Demonstrated track record in developing novel clinical therapies and/or translational studies.
  • Successful experience in progressively responsible research, administrative, and educational leadership positions at a high-quality academic institution.
  • Strong track record of funded research and strong potential for continued competitive research funding.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff, and students as well as community groups of diverse academics, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English) and strong professional network. Vietnamese proficiency is a plus.
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty.
  • An appreciative understanding of the challenges that inevitably arise from the operation of a new University, with the patience, resilience, and ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents of an institution to effectively resolve challenges and build opportunities to promote the mission and vision of the College/University

COMPENSATION

The salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

LIVING AND WORKING IN HANOI, VIETNAM

  • Work permit: VinUniversity will assist in and provide advice for obtaining the necessary paperwork needed for employment in Vietnam (visa, work permit, insurance, etc.). However, it is your responsibility to ensure that you can satisfy all the paper requirements in a timely manner.
