Carbon Footprint Monitoring and Management System for Tourism
Carbon Footprint Monitoring and Management System for Tourism
Successful applicants will join as Master’s students / PhD students / -Research Assistants at the Smart Green Transformation Center (GREEN-X), College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS), VinUniversity.
Project Information
This project focuses on developing a comprehensive system for monitoring and managing carbon emissions, aiming to foster sustainable development in Vietnam’s tourism industry – a vital economic pillar that also contributes significantly to environmental impact.
In the context of global climate change, transitioning to a green tourism model requires precise measurement tools and effective management solutions. The project therefore focuses on building an integrated system that combines AI technology, modern carbon accounting methods, and business management tools to help businesses, policymakers, and tourists better understand their environmental footprint. At its core, the research seeks to develop a carbon footprint framework specifically adapted to the unique characteristics and context of the Vietnamese tourism sector.
The research structure is defined around three closely interconnected pillars: the establishment of standardized measurement metrics, the application of AI in emission data analysis, and the proposal of green growth management strategies, thereby facilitating a systematic reduction in carbon emissions.
The project team includes: Assoc. Prof. Phan Thi Thuc Anh (Principal Investigator) | Prof. Yin Chun Yang (Co-PI) | Prof. ZhengChang Qin (Co-PI).
Research Objectives
The project focuses on the following key objectives:
(i) To develop a sector- specific carbon management framework: Creating a system of criteria and calculation methodologies for carbon emissions tailored to accommodation, transportation, and tourism services in Vietnam.
(ii) To utilize AI and Big Data for monitoring: Developing predictive models and automated analytics to help businesses track emissions in real-time and identify carbon hotspots within the supply chain.
(iii) To propose management solutions and policy recommendations: Building decision- support toolkits for tourism enterprises and policy frameworks for the government to promote a green economy and enhance sustainable competitiveness.
The project expects to establish an intelligent management platform that contributes practically to the national Net Zero roadmap and improves responsible tourism experiences for the community.
