How Wearables Are Changing Cancer Care in Vietnam?

Successful candidates will become PhD / Research Master’s students or Research Assistants at the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC), VinUniversity.

Project Information

Cancer care extends beyond hospital-based treatment to include recovery and long-term health management at home. However, in Vietnam, comprehensive solutions that support both the physical and mental well-being of cancer survivors remain limited.

To address this challenge, under the leadership of Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoa Huyen – College of Health Sciences and Dr. Pham Huy Hieu – College of Engineering and Computer Science, the research team collaborates with the VinUni-Illinois Smart Health Center (VISHC) to implement the Cancer Wellness Program (CWP) – part of VISHC’s large-scale project “Developing a unified, low-cost, self-care mobile health application for common disease screening and early detection in low-and middle-income countries”.

At the heart of the CWP is the i-CanManage Smart App, a mobile health platform that integrates data from Fitbit wearable devices with personalized health education and clinician monitoring. The application collects and analyzes both physical health data (step count, heart rate, sleep quality, oxygen saturation, etc.) and psychological well-being data, enabling tailored lifestyle and behavioral recommendations to support recovery and long-term health management. Real-time analysis of wearable data allows continuous monitoring of patient conditions and early detection of complications or recurrence risks after treatment.

The project aims to create a comprehensive care model that can be scaled nationwide and applied in various healthcare contexts, thereby improving public health with lower costs.
